Kuerten Tops Norman In Mallorca Open

Their last meaningful meeting on clay came in the 2000 Roland Garros final. Today, Gustavo Kuerten and Magnus Norman met again and the three-time French Open champion Kuerten prevailed with a 6-1, 5-7, 6-3 victory at the Mallorca Open.

It was Kuerten's second victory of the season, following his 6-2, 6-3 triumph over Nikolay Davydenko in his opening match. In the 2000 French Open final, Kuerten defeated Norman 6-2, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6.

The former No. 2 Norman played through qualifying to reach the main draw where he downed Mariano Albert 6-3, 6-4 to earn his second ATP main draw victory of the season set up a marquee match against the three-time French Open champion.

It was Norman's advice that contributed to Kuerten's decision to undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right hip on February 26th in Nashville. Dr. Thomas Byrd performed the surgery on both Kuerten and Norman, who had the surgery last August.
