Norman is Highest Seed to Fall

Magnus Norman of Sweden became Wimbledon's highest ranked casualty when he was beaten over the full five set distance by the 19-year-old Belgian Olivier Rochus, playing in his first Grand Slam event after coming through the qualifying event.

Rochus won 6-4 2-6 6-4 6-7 6-1 in more than three hours of captivating match play with Norman, the third seed, in danger of going out in four sets until he captured the tie break to take the second round match to a decisive fifth set.

In the last set, Rochus jumped into a 5-0 lead but Norman held on to win the sixth game after saving a match point and having saved a second match point in the next game was beaten on the third.

Norman, who was runner up to Gustavo Kuerten in the French Open, was making his third appearance in the second round having advanced when Mark Woodforde retired against him with a back injury. Before Wimbledon Norman had played more matches in singles than any other player this year, winning 42 of 54.

Rochus, brother of Belgian tour player Christophe who is also at Wimbledon, was the eleventh ranked junior in the world in 1997. He beat fellow Belgian Reginald Willems to qualify for the main draw at Wimbledon and had never played a match on the tour before The Championships.
