Norman withdraws with back injury

BASEL, Switzerland -- Top-seeded Magnus Norman pulled out of the Swiss Indoors tournament on Tuesday because of back injury.

The Swede, No. 4 in the ATP rankings, was coming off a victory last weekend in Shanghai, China, where he said his back first began to hurt.

Richard Krajicek, showing no lingering effects from his repeated injuries this season, used a bullet serve to beat fifth-seeded Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain 6-4, 6-3 in the opening round.

Krajicek, who has beaten Ferrero in all three of their matches, is seeking his first title this season. Sweden's Andreas Vinciguerra routed Morocco's Younes El Aynaoui 6-0, 6-1, and Slovakia's Dominik Hrbaty beat France's Sebastien Grosjean 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.

On Wednesday, 1998 champion Tim Henman, a recent champion in Austria, opens against Spanish qualifier Tommy Robredo. Thomas Enqvist, who became the top seed after Norman withdrew, will face Jan-Michael Gambill.

Norman was a strong favorite to win because of the absence of the world's top three players -- Pete Sampras, Marat Safin and Gustavo Kuerten.

"I am very disappointed because my game has been coming together," Norman said. "I would have loved to win here in Basel."

Norman is looking to accumulate points for the Tennis Masters Cup in Lisbon, Portugal, which runs from Nov. 27 to Dec. 3.

Norman said his back pain started during his rain-delayed quarterfinal in Shanghai against Jonas Bjorkman. The pain worsened after his semifinal against Michael Chang later the same day.

Romania's Andrei Pavel was to have played Norman in the opening match in Basel and instead will face Stephane Huet of France.
