Magnus Norman: One match at a time
By Allan Jacob Chennai:

What strikes you most about Magnus Norman is his boyish charm. The celebrity trappings are missing and you warm up to the man as he speaks of his life and passion for the sport he loves most.

The top seed at the Gold Flake Open and the World No.4 tennis player says he is in no tearing hurry, but takes one match at a time.

"It’s a tough field and I will have to produce my best tennis," he says, as he eases into his chair.

The 24-year-old Swede faces American wild-card entrant, Taylor Dent, in his first-round match.

"Taylor has a good serve and is a formidable opponent. He’s a good mover too and is improving with each outing," opines Norman who keeps a diary of his matches and opponents.

How does he handle the pressure of staying at the top? Pat comes the reply. "Hard work. I just stay focussed and enjoy my tennis. I’m having more fun since my heart surgery in ?7," says the small-town Swede.

The soft-spoken ‘Nors?is a patriot at heart. "It’s always country first and there is no clash between the tour and the call of duty for the Davis Cup."

Norman admits a fondness for clay and rues his loss at Roland Garros this year in the final. "A Grand Slam win figures on the top of my priorities at the moment, the rest will follow," he says.

The oldest of the new breed of players tipped to topple the old guard, the Swede says stars like Sampras and Agassi are far from finished.

But the battle for the top spot will get hotter. "Players like Marat Safin, Gustavo Kuerten and Franco Squillari, Andreas Vinciguerra and myself are here to stay. It’s gonna be more exciting with the new ATP points format," he says. "Anyone can win on his day," he says.

"I have to play better, push myself to the limits and success will follow," says the modest Swede who will now let his tennis do the talking in this coastal city.
