Norman upset in first round by Dent
MADRAS, India -- Top-seeded Magnus Norman was upset in the first
round of the $400,000 Gold Flake Open on Tuesday, beaten 6-3, 7-6
(3) by 19-year-old American Taylor Dent.
Dent, a big-serving wild card, broke the Swedish star in the eighth game
and then held serve to take the first set.
Norman went up 3-0 in the second set but Dent clawed back to tie it 4-4.
Both players held serve the rest of the way, with Dent in command in the
tiebreaker.
In other first-round matches Tuesday, third-seeded Cedric Pioline of
France rallied past Galo Blanco of Spain 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4).
Pioline, a semifinalist in this event last year, will next meet Ronald Agenor
of Haiti. Agenor, the oldest player in the tournament at 38, topped
Thomas Zib of the Czech Republic 6-3, 6-2.
Also, defending champion Jerome Golmard of France beat George Bastl
of Switzerland 7-5, 6-7 (3), 6-1; sixth-seeded Andrea Vinciguerra of
