Norman clears first hurdle in Marseille, next plays Mirnyi

MARSEILLE, France (AP) -- Top-seed Magnus Norman moved into the second round of the US$500,000 Marseille Open tennis tournament on Wednesday by beating Belgian Davis Cup player Olivier Rochus.

Norman won 7-6 (10-8), 7-5 to set up an intriguing second-round clash with Max Mirnyi of Belarus.

When the two players met in the third round of last year's U.S. Open, Norman staved off four match points before beating Mirnyi 11-9 in the fifth-set tiebreaker

Second-seed Yevgeni Kafelnikov of Russia had an easy 6-3, 6-2 first-round victory over French wild card Jerome Golmard, who was playing only his second match since he hurt his back last summer.

Arnaud Clement, seeded third after reaching the final of the Australian Open, brushed aside Croatia's Goran Ivanisevic 6-4, 6-3.

Eighth-seed Thomas Johansson of Sweden was the first seeded player to fall, going down 6-4, 6-2 to the two-fisted subtlety of France's Fabrice Santoro.

Switzerland's Roger Federer, who downed French wild card Cyril Saulnier 7-6 (9-7), 6-4, also claimed a second-round berth.

A recent titlist in Milan and a key player in his country's defeat of the United States in last week's first round of the Davis Cup, the 19-year old Federer is a clear favorite to beat American qualifier Bob Bryan in the second round.

Bryan will be the lone American in the second round.

In other first-round matches, Jiri Vanek of the Czech Republic knocked out the Ukraine's Andrei Medvedev 6-4, 1-6, 6-4, Karol Kucera of Slovakia led American Jeff Tarango 7-6 (7-5), 5-3 before Tarango retired and fourth-seed Sebastian Grosjean of France defeated Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia 7-5, 7-6 (7-5).

In late first-round action Tuesday, French qualifier Nicolas Mahut edged South Africa's Neville Godwin 7-6 (9-7), 6-7 (5-7), 6-1, and Switzerland's Michel Kratochvil eased through 6-4, 6-1 against Frenchman Stephane Huet.
