Norman, Rosset lose in Marseille

MARSEILLE, France (AP) -- Max Mirnyi of Belarus avenged last year's third-round U.S. Open loss to Magnus Norman on Thursday, beating the top-seeded Swede 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 in the US$500,000 Marseille Open.

"It was only a couple of points that decided it," a disconsolate Norman said. "But he served really well."

In the quarterfinals Friday, Mirnyi will meet France's Julian Boutter, who downed defending champion Marc Rosset of Switzerland, seeded seventh, 6-3, 6-4.

Boutter is on the rise, having made his first career final in Milan, and he closed out Rosset by smashing down five aces in his last two service games.

Rosset held nine breakpoints in the match but Boutter saved them all.

The Swiss visibly struggled to control his temper. When a local TV cameraman came on court to film his opponent during the changeover with the score at 3-2 for Boutter in the second set, Rosset exploded: "Get off court before I punch your head in!"

Swedish chair-umpire Mohammed Lahyani ordered the cameraman off court.

On a day when seeded players suffered, France's Arnaud Clement (3), lost to Switzerland's Michel Kratochvil, currently ranked 78th in the world, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

A budding idol in his native France since his Australian Open final, Clement put Thursday's defeat down to media pressure and fatigue from an accumulation of tough matches.

In other second-round action, Switzerland's Roger Federer defeated American qualifier Bob Bryan 7-6 (1), 6-3; France's Sebastien Grosjean beat Czech player Jiri Vanek 6-2, 6-2; Cedric Pioline won an all-French struggle with Jean-Rene Lisnard 6-7 (6), 6-2, 6-4; second seed Yevgeny Kafelnikov of Russia overcame French qualifier Nicolas Mahut 4-6, 6-1, 6-2; and Slovakia's Karol Kucera defeated Fabrice Santoro of France 6-2, 7-5.
