Ferrero triumphs over Norman
In the semifinals, Hrbaty will face Spanish No. 7 seed Juan Carlos Ferrero, who triumphed
over Swedish No. 2 seed Magnus Norman 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 in their New Balls Please campaign
quarterfinal clash.
In a first-time match-up between the campaign stars, Ferrero proved too much for Norman,
to advance to his first semifinal of the new year.
At Dubai, Ferrero, who was a finalist in this event last year, will pursue his
second-career title, after a victory at Mallorca in 1999.
Ferrero's semifinal against Hrbaty will be a first-ever ATP encounter between the players.
In an all-Czech quarterfinal showdown in doubles, Tomas Cibulec and Leos Friedl edged past
the No. 2 seed and defending champions Jiri Novak and David Rikl 6-3, 7-6(2) to reach the
semifinals.
Advancing, Cibulec and Friedl will face Canadian/Yugoslavian No. 4 seeds Daniel Nestor and
Nenad Zimonjic, who defeated Hrbaty and Germany's David Prinosil 4-6, 7-6(6), 6-2.
On the other side of the draw, Australian No. 3 seeds Joshua Eagle and Sandon Stolle
eliminated the South African/Belgian pairing of Chris Haggard and Tom VanHoudt with a
convincing 6-1, 6-3 dismissal.
In the semifinals, the No. 3 seeds will square off against the No. 1 seeded team of
Yevgeny Kafelnikov and Max Mirnyi, who rallied past the Indian tandem of Mahesh Bhupathi
and Leander Paes 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.
