Norman and Enqvist Play Ice Tennis
The popular Swedes recently invented a new game in Arizona:
ice-tennis.
Magnus Norman and Thomas Enqvist participated in an activity
at Sunday night's NHL game featuring the Phoenix Coyotes vs. the Colorado Avalanche.
Norman and Enqvist laced up hockey skates during the second intermission, delighting the
crowd with display of ice tennis. The two Swedes played a quick set of tennis on the ice,
followed by a hockey exhibition, as they alternated turns attempting slapshots from the
far blue-line.
While their tennis wasn't as competitive as they expect at this week's ATP event in
Scottsdale, AZ, Norman took the evenings honors netting three-of-five goals. Enqvist also
contributed one goal. The two hit a number of autographed tennis balls into the sell-out
crowd at America West Arena and provided analysis of the game on the Coyotes' radio
broadcast.
Enqvist enjoyed his brief ice-tennis exhibition, but doesn't see a future on this surface.
"It was fun to hit around out there tonight, but the ice is much too fast to play on
it for real. Fortunately this wasn't a real match."
"Growing up in Sweden, I always dreamed of becoming a professional hockey player.
It's exciting to be able to put on skates in front of this many people," Norman said.
"The Avalanche are my favorite NHL team, and this is the first time I've ever seen
them play."
The Swedes also caught up with NHL All-Star Peter Forsberg after the game. Forsberg won
the NHL Stanley Cup with Colorado in 1996 and led the Swedish Olympic team to the Olympic
gold medal in 1994. Forsberg netted a goal in Colorado's 5-0 rout of Phoenix.
"Peter Forsberg is a national hero back in Sweden, and one of the best known
athletes," Norman added. "I'm really happy to meet him."
