Swedes Advance at Scottsdale

On Monday, Magnus Norman led the charge into the second round at Scottsdale. At the Franklin Templeton Tennis Classic, Swedish No. 3 seed Magnus Norman disposed of Italian Gianluca Pozzi in straight sets 7-6(3), 6-3 to advance to the second round at Scottsdale.

Coming off of a quarterfinal finish at Dubai, the New Balls Please campaign star upped his career-record against Pozzi to 3-0, after scoring wins against the Italian in each of the past two seasons.

Norman's fellow countryman Thomas Enqvist opened his 2001 ATP campaign at Scottsdale with a first win against Younes El Aynaoui. The Swede lost the first set to the Moroccan player, but advanced and won 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. In the next round, Enqvist will face American wild card Mardy Fish who ousted Juan Ignacio Chela 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Schuettler first to advance at Scottsdale

In pursuit of his first title of the year, Norman faces a second-round shootout against Argentine wild card Jose Acasuso, who battled past Korean Hyung-Taik Lee 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(2).

In Monday's first match, Germany's Rainer Schuettler closed out Frenchman Arnaud Di Pasquale's campaign at Scottsdale early, with a 6-2, 6-3 straight-set dismissal.

In the second round, Schuettler will square off against the winner of Chilean No. 7 seed Marcelo Rios' first-round engagement against Romanian qualifier Adrian Voinea.

Australian Richard Fromberg was also an early winner on Monday, rallying from behind to cut short Armenian Sargis Sargsian's visit to Scottsdale 5-7 6-3, 6-4.

Fromberg faces a possible second-round showdown with compatriot No. 4 seed and defending champion Lleyton Hewitt. The Australian New Balls Please star opens his campaign against Spain's David Sanchez.

Sixth seeded Tim Henman easily cruised into the second round with a straight 6-1, 6-2 win over Spain's Albert Costa.
