Norman: The Third Big Name Out of Barcelona Open BARCELONA (Reuters) - Swedish second seed Magnus Norman retired from his opening match at the Barcelona Open on Wednesday after just two games because of illness. Norman's hasty exit from his clash with Spain's Albert Portas leaves the $1,000,000 clay court tournament without its top three seeds. Top-seeded Brazilian Gustavo Kuerten withdrew Tuesday while Russian defending champion Marat Safin pulled out on Saturday. Neither injured player had begun their Catalan campaigns. Norman, who was given a bye in the first round, was not immediately available for comment but Portas said the Swede had told him he was ill. "He can explain better than me," said Portas after Norman's departure with the score in the second round match level at 1-1 in the first set. "He told me in the dressing room he was a bit off but I didn't know to what extent." Source: Excite.com |
