Germany, Australia win at ATP World Team Championship
Updated 7:37 PM ET May 21, 2001
DUSSELDORF, Germany (Ticker) -- It took the deciding doubles match for Germany and Australia to win their respective first round-robin encounters Monday at the $2.1 million ATP World Team Championship.

Germany defeated Sweden and Australia downed Spain by identical 2-1 scores to improve to 1-0 in the Blue Group.

Tommy Haas gave Germany a 1-0 lead by outdueling slumping Magnus Norman of Sweden, 6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (7-2), 6-4.

Haas came back from a set and 1-4 down to pull out the victory over the slumping Norman, who has lost seven of his last 10 matches.

"I should have won," said Norman, last year's French Open runner-up. "I played pretty well, I'm just struggling a bit when it comes to closing out matches."

Thomas Enqvist leveled the series for Sweden after dumping Nicolas Kiefer, 6-2, 6-3.

Haas teamed with David Prinosil to provide Germany with the round-robin win by surprising Swedish doubles specialists, Jonas Bjorkman and Nicklas Kulti, 6-4, 6-3.

"We have a really good team and I think we have a bright future," said Haas of the German team.

In a rematch of last year's Davis Cup final, Alex Corretja defeated Australian teenager Lleyton Hewitt for the second time in three weeks by pulling out a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 win in the first singles match.

But Patrick Rafter made a triumphant return from a shoulder injury by defeating Spain's Juan Balcells, 6-3, 6-2, to force the pivotal doubles match.

Rafter and Hewitt joined forces to outlast Corretja and Balcells, 6-4, 0-6, 6-3, to give Australia the comeback victory and avenge its Davis Cup loss to Spain.

Balcells was playing singles in place of Juan Carlos Ferrero, who withdrew Monday due to a severe muscle strain in both groins.

Ferrero captured the Tennis Masters Series event in Rome two weeks ago before losing to countryman Albert Portas in the final of the Tennis Masters Series event at Hamburg, Germany on Sunday.

There will be two Red Group encounters on Tuesday, with the United States taking on Russia and France facing Argentina.

On Sunday, the U.S. defeated Argentina, 2-1, and France swept Russia.

Slovakia, which defeated Russia in last year's final, is not entered.

The countries with the best record in each group after three round-robin matchups will advance to Saturday's final. This event is the final warmup for the French Open, which begins May 28.
