WIMBLEDON, England (AP) - Magnus Norman of Sweden,
Nicolas Lapentti of Ecuador and Karol
Kucera of Slovakia on Thursday became the latest players to withdraw
from Wimbledon.
Norman, who was seeded 18th, pulled out with a hip injury and fellow
Swede Jonas Bjorkman would replace him among the seeded players at No.
33, the Wimbledon referee's office said.
Bjorkman will open against Lars Burgsmuller of Germany, who was
supposed to play Norman.
Lapentti, seeded 30th, has an elbow injury and was replaced by Harel
Levy of Israel. Levy will play a first-round match against Tommy Robredo
of Spain.
Kucera was scheduled to play 17th-seeded Tommy
Haas of Germany in the first round.
Other big names already out of the men's event are world No. 1 Gustavo
Kuerten, who won his third French
Open title 10 days ago, runner-up Alex
Corretja, Mark Philippousis, '96 Wimbledon champion Richard
Krajicek and Marcelo
Rios, all through injury.
Missing from the women's field are Monica
Seles, Mary
Pierce and Anna
Kournikova.
