STOCKHOLM, Sweden -- Swedish tennis star
Magnus Norman will undergo hip surgery and miss the rest of the year.
The operation is planned for the next week or two at a clinic in
Nashville, Tenn., Dr. Per Renstroem of Sweden's Davis Cup team said.
The 25-year-old Swede will miss the Davis Cup semifinals Sept. 21-23
against Australia in Sydney, Australia.
"We have decided to do the operation," Norman was quoted as
saying by the Swedish news agency TT. "That means that this season is
over, and I aim for a comeback at the beginning of next year."
The injury in Norman's left hip first surfaced last December, just
before the Australian Open.
"He has experienced trouble since last year, but mainly since last
March and has not been able to train properly," Renstroem said.
"It has been a long process. He has not been able to play and he's
glad we are doing something really active."
Renstroem said if the operation succeeds, Norman should be back on the
ATP Tour in January.
Norman, the French Open finalist last year, withdrew from Wimbledon
because of the sore hip. He came back a month later and reached the
semifinals in the Swedish Open at Bastad, where he won his first ATP Tour
title in 1997.
