INJURY UPDATE

MAGNUS NORMAN has pulled out of Vienna and Tennis Masters Series Stuttgart and Paris because of a potentially career-threatening hip injury. The Swede has been on crutches since undergoing surgery on August 21, and hoped to return in the New Year, but according to Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet, the healing process hasn't gone as well as expected and he will be on crutches for a further six weeks. According to Norman's agent at IMG, Per Hjertqvist, there is a 10 percent chance that the man who finished fourth in last year's ATP Champions Race, will have to retire. Norman is frustrated, but staying positive. "It's tough, very tough, but there is still a 90 percent chance that I can continue. I have to live as if it is going to be that way," he told Svenska Dagbladet. "Not knowing is the toughest part. If I only knew that I could come back, it wouldn't really matter if it was six months or one year."

QUESTIONS PLEASE Got a question about the ATP? Let us know and we'll try to get an answer.
Q: What will happen to Magnus Norman's Entry System Position if he returns to action in 12 months?
A: He will be allowed to petition the CEO for an Entry Protection as long as his written request is received within six months of his last tournament (which was in Cincinnati at the start of August). The Entry Protection will be a position in the ATP Entry System determined by his average ESP of the first three months after his injury. That protected position will not get him a seeding or help him into the Tennis Masters Cup, but it will apply to eight ATP tournaments after his injury, or for the period up to nine months after his first event back, whichever is sooner.
